Details: A 50 year old female, recreational distance runner, was evaluated for ankle pain. The pain has become more frequent over the past couple of months. She reports her ankle gives out at times. The pain is dull at most times with some sharp spikes of pain with certain activities or movements. Her ankle is stiff in the morning. It does not hurt during her running but becomes painful afterwards. There is mild swelling from time to time. She reports an injury over 30 years ago in which she badly sprained her ankle. She has had pain off and on but nothing as bad as it has been recently. During her physical exam, there is mild pain to touch the front of her ankle. Movement of her ankle is normal. There is some clicking while moving the foot up and down. An x-ray of her ankle confirmed degenerative changes in her ankle joint. Her osteoarthritis of the ankle was treated though both physical therapy and ultrasound guided injections in the office.
