VSMD specializes in identifying, treating, and preventing pain and injuries to help you achieve optimal health and performance goals through a non-surgical approach. We use evidence based medical practice and sport specific rehabilitation to get you back doing what you love.
We manage fractures and dislocations through reduction, immobilization, cast, boot, brace, and other techniques. For severe injuries requiring operative management, we refer patients for a surgical consult.
Overuse & Chronic Injuries
We diagnose and treat overuse injuries including tennis elbow, golfers elbow, tendonopathies, shoulder impingement, back pain issues, rotator cuff issues, and many others.
Regenerative therapies, such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), are safe, non-surgical procedures that can be done in the office. They have a faster return-to-play time than surgical procedures and are becoming more popular among athletes as a preferred treatment.
Joint Injections with Ultrasound
Joint injections can be done in the office. A diagnostic injection may be done to identify a pain source or confirm a diagnosis. Therapeutic injections help to relieve pain and treat injury. Common injections include steroid, viscosupplement, prolotherapy, and PRP. Among others, these injections can be done under ultrasound imaging to ensure precise location and targeting of the problem area.
Corticosteroid injections
Corticosteroid injections help to relieve pain and inflammation. They can be done for various reasons such as osteoarthritis pain and swelling, rheumatoid arthritis pain and swelling, joint effusions or swelling, pain relief to soft tissue in the area of injury or chronic pain. Steroid injections are relatively safe if deemed appropriate by your physician.
Viscosupplements are injections of hyaluronic acid that help to relieve pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis. They are safe injections that can help to lubricate the joint. This type of joint injection may help to return you to pain free activity with little to no downtime.
Nerve Treatments
When nerves become inflamed and irritated they may need special treatment or relief. Based on the evaluation, your VSMD doctor may decide to diagnose nerve pain as the source of your pain through a diagnostic injection. This type of injection is done at a very specific location under ultrasound imaging, typically with a short acting anesthetic medicine.
A diagnostic ultrasound allows a comprehensive evaluation of the problem area and may include evaluation of a joint, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, soft tissue, and blood vessels. Ultrasound, sometimes called sonogram, is a type of imaging that can be done in the office. It does not expose the patient to radiation, in fact, it uses sound waves to create an image on the screen.
Therapeutic ultrasound refers to the use of ultrasound to provide a therapy, such as a joint injection or tendon injection. The physician will use ultrasound guidance to ensure therapy is directed to a precise location, the problem area.
We provide a comprehensive in-office evaluation and care for concussions. Concussion is a brain injury that is common in many sports (contact and collision sports with the highest numbers), motor vehicle accidents, and trauma (such as from falls or being hit in the head). Football, wrestling, hockey, and soccer have the highest risk of concussion. A concussion occurs due to direct impact of the head or through an indirect force that affects the head and neck.
The Pre-participation Physical Evaluation, more commonly known as sports physical, is a necessary component to screen and prevent illness and injury. In an effort to ensure a safe athletic environment for each individual and to highlight the importance of injury and disease prevention, a PPE is often required prior to participation at various levels of competition.
